Here are 4 early signs of breast cancer every woman (and teen) should know. These signs don’t always mean cancer, but they should never be ignored:
1. A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
-
Often painless
-
May feel hard, irregular, or different from surrounding tissue
-
Can appear in the breast or the armpit area
👉 Many lumps are harmless, but any new or changing lump should be checked.
2. Change in breast size, shape, or appearance
-
One breast suddenly looks larger, smaller, or uneven
-
Swelling in part of the breast
-
A breast that looks different from usual
3. Skin changes on the breast
-
Dimpling or puckering (sometimes described as “orange peel” texture)
-
Redness, darkening, or thickened skin
-
Skin that feels warm or irritated without a clear reason
4. Nipple changes or discharge
-
Nipple turning inward (if it wasn’t before)
-
Unusual discharge (especially clear or bloody, without squeezing)
-
Pain, crusting, or sores on the nipple
Important to remember
-
Early breast cancer may not cause pain
-
These signs can happen at any age
-
Regular self-awareness (knowing what’s normal for your body) is key
If you or someone notices any of these changes, it’s important to tell a parent/guardian and see a healthcare professional. Early detection saves lives.
